Recognise your experience

New Zealand demands that you can prove your expertise and guarantee the quality of your work. If you've worked in the industry for years but have no qualification, BCITO can help you get a professional qualification to recognise your existing skills and experience.

Gain a qualification to recognise your skills

In order to advance my career and be paid accordingly, I needed a qualification. Mike Gibbes, Mike Gibbes Decorating

BCITO can assess your current skills and abilities against the standards required to gain a professional qualification in most trades we cover – get in touch and we can discuss your options.

How it works

You provide evidence (such as written or photographic evidence, and references) of your skills, and a BCITO training advisor visits you onsite for practical assessments. If we assess that your industry experience is sound, we can sign you into a BCITO training agreement and commence the process. If the aromatawai highlights areas that require further work, you will need to complete additional assessment activities – we will provide BCITO resources to prepare you for this.

A dedicated training advisor to help guide you

Your BCITO training advisor will keep in contact with you throughout the process and conduct assessment as required. Once you successfully demonstrate your competence you'll gain a New Zealand Certificate qualification in your trade.

How long it takes

Having your experience recognised can take anywhere from three months to a year – it depends on how much industry experience you have. One big advantage of the process is that you can complete most assessments at your own pace.

What trades qualify for this?
