BCITO’s Edvance Maths Booster Programme Takes The Fear Out Of Figures
When apprentice Connie Johnson stepped into the world of painting and decorating, she was eager to excel in her craft and truly understand the complexities behind every brushstroke.
Working on high-profile homes for Flett Painters, one of New Zealand's top painting companies, gave Connie an appetite for learning. She started investigating study options that would build on her work experience.

“Working with the best in the industry is a privilege, and I’m constantly motivated to improve my skills and knowledge. I began an apprenticeship with BCITO as I wanted to keep up with new techniques and really understand the processes,” Connie explains.
Two years on, one of the areas she was keen to boost her confidence in was maths. She recognised it was holding her back from making some of the calculations you need to do on the job. BCITO Training Advisor Catherine Redfearn recommended BCITO’s Edvance Maths Booster Programme.

Edvance specialises in workplace literacy and numeracy training. The Maths Booster Programme, conducted over six weeks via Zoom, covers essential topics related to Connie’s trade, including BEDMAS (which teaches division, multiplication, addition and subtraction), spacing measurements, calculations and trigonometry.
“The thought of revisiting maths was daunting. I was a complete beginner and thought I was going to be staring into space!” Connie recalls. “And I was wrong. My tutor Kelly was fantastic. She encouraged me to stay on the calls as long as I needed to and ask as many questions as I wanted. It was exciting when things clicked.”
Kelly Warner became a tutor at Edvance after returning to New Zealand from a career in Forensics in the UK.
“I wanted to help people prepare for their careers, whether it’s in the police, fire brigade, or like Connie, in the trades. I teach the maths they need in their role, using examples they can relate to. Seeing them gain confidence and skills is incredibly rewarding,” she says.
“Connie came into the course with a fear of maths, and I saw that fear turn into interest. It was amazing to see her progress—she went from doubting her abilities to confidently working through Pythagoras’ theorem and trigonometry. Helping apprentices like Connie overcome their fears and realise their potential is why I do what I do.”
The skills Connie gained through the programme are practical. They translated directly into her daily work, from understanding floor plans to calculating paint volumes.
“The Maths Booster course has been a game-changer. I can now work out measurements and quotes on my own, which has improved my confidence at work,” Connie explains.

She’s grateful to BCITO for connecting her with Edvance, as well as the ongoing support she’s received throughout her apprenticeship, including regular communication, resources and practical guidance.
“Catherine and the team at BCITO have been amazing. They’ve given me the tools and confidence to keep going, even on the tough days – reminding me that I’m doing a great job.”
