Erenihi takes a leap of faith to fulfil his leadership dream

Carpenter Erenihi Kawiti has never been afraid of a challenge. When offered the chance to participate in a BCITO leadership course for young Māori, Mana Whakatipu, Mana Tangata, he jumped at the chance to push himself further – and use his skills to help others.

It was Erenihi’s koro who inspired him to go into the trades, being a farmer, builder and mechanic who could “turn his hand to anything”, says Erenihi. Yet it was initially a struggle for Erenihi to find work. He completed a Level 3 and Level 4 building course and then went on to work in frame and truss at Placemakers to gain experience. After much perseverance, he finally started a BCITO Carpentry apprenticeship at CH Construction in Drury, South Auckland.

BCITO Training Advisor David McDonald (Doogie) noted his drive and leadership capabilities.

“At church, I’m involved in mentorship and spiritual support for other church members. I’ve always had a big heart for people – always been drawn to help,” Erenihi says.

So, Doogie suggested putting him forward for the pilot BCITO Rangatira Development Programme (now Mana Whakatipu, Mana Tangata), a course aimed at shaping the next generation of Māori leaders in the building and construction industry. Of course, Erenihi said yes.

It was a real leap out of his comfort zone which saw him participating in a multi-day course in the Marlborough Sounds. This involved a 14km kayak from Kaiteriteri to Rākauroa and stopping at places of cultural significance to hear pūrākau (stories). Other experiences included self-belief training, learning and practicing the ancient art of mau rākau (Māori weaponry) under expert guidance, and the infamous “leap of faith” obstacle course that tested participants’ courage, trust and teamwork. Everything was developed to build resilience, confidence and cultural connection, pushing participants to explore their full potential.

“It was right up my alley. I’m a bit of a risk-taker, and I’ve always seen myself owning my own business one day. There was a lot of practical stuff and the facilitators were really down to earth – they were amazing,” Erenihi explains.

“It’s given me more drive to be better and to continue to challenge myself. Also, in the construction trades, it’s important for men especially to be encouraged to speak up about their worries. The job often involves a lot of stress but talking isn’t normalised. This was a place where participants could open up and talk about things. We need more of that.”

Craig Harkness, Erenihi’s employer at CH Construction, has also noticed a real change since Erenihi went on the course.

“He’s really grown over the last 12 months, especially after the Rangatira leadership course that he went on through BCITO. The course was of huge benefit for his belief and identity. He’s come back with more confidence, happy to take leadership on a project, and he takes ownership of his decisions and actions. I’m really pleased for him – he’s a good young man.”

The course was such a success that it’s now permanent, with a new, extended programme open to both Tāne and Wāhine undertaking their building and construction apprenticeships in 2025. As he celebrates completing his apprenticeship, and the imminent arrival of a baby daughter, Erenihi urges all young Māori to step up and give it a go.

“This is an opportunity for you to grow. If that’s what you’re looking for, to change your thinking and push yourselves, I’d really recommend it,” he says.

BCITO is looking for more rangatahi with leadership potential to step up for the 2025 Mana Whakatipu, Mana Tangata programme. If you’re up for it, let your BCITO Training Advisor know and read more here: Mana Whakatipu, Mana Tangata. Expressions of interest close 20 June 2025.
