Who you are tomorrow, begins with what you do today and we are all interested in the reasons that apprentices sign up but later withdraw. For some, it's just that their lives change, plans don't work out, or other options come along. Some others though, we can do something about and in many cases, we do just that. Others, we may not know about until it's too late.
BCITO would like to have a better way of predicting success. With this in mind, we have entered an agreement with the NZ Council for Educational Research (NZCER) who will undertake a two-year study that examines the factors that underlie success for our apprentices. The main goal of this is for NZCER to equip us with an adaptive 'tool' that will analyse a wide range of characteristics of each apprentice and then provide a profile of their likely success.
This tool will become increasingly intelligent as more apprentices' data is recorded and any effects on outcomes are observed. The best analogy is the smart motorway where the underlying analysis (the mathematical algorithm) constantly 'learns' the implications of traffic behaviour, weather conditions and similar factors on journey times, and adjusts speed limits accordingly.
The project will deal with sophisticated information such as an apprentice's personal characteristics – individual learning dispositions, state of health, getting married, taking on a mortgage, relationship with the boss, etc.
This is a groundbreaking undertaking. In order to make it work, we will be calling on the support and help of our field staff, apprentices and employers to complete short surveys, work with the project team, gather information, and generally be a part of the solution.
