Leading With Empathy: Building More Than Kitchens

Brad Street’s journey with The Kitchen Business began nine years ago and from the outset, he was inspired by the warmth and generosity of the company’s founder, Mary Woods. For over 30 years, Mary and her late husband Rob built the Mount Maunganui business known not only for creating beautiful kitchens but also for fostering a work environment where kindness and respect were central to everything they did.

When Brad and his wife had the opportunity to purchase the business three years ago, they were determined to continue that legacy.

“Mary was the most kind-hearted and genuine person I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting,” Brad shares. “It’s an honour to carry forward the reputation she created.”

Under Brad’s leadership, The Kitchen Business has become a place where people truly feel supported—something that recently earned Brad a BCITO Building Leaders Award in the Kitchen & Design category. Nominated by apprentice Simon Maiava, Brad’s award highlighted his compassionate and inclusive approach.

“I sometimes struggle with anxiety but Brad has always been supportive and empathetic towards mental health struggles. The first time I phoned Brad to let him know I was feeling some anxiety and was going to be late to work, he reacted so kindly. He showed compassion and understanding and a patience that I’m not often used to.

“He has always made me feel included and an important part of the team. I feel valued, and work has extended to become a ‘safe space’ for me,” says Simon.

From the start, Brad knew he wanted to build a team that prioritised personality over technical skill.

“I believe you can change the way people work but not the way they act,” he explains. This has built a culture of positivity and mutual respect that extends beyond the workbench.

Brad places a strong emphasis on communication and ensuring his team feels comfortable and valued. Simply checking in with his team members regularly and creating a safe space for open conversations has become a hallmark of his leadership style.

“I always make an effort to ask if people are okay,” he says. “It’s about ensuring no one feels uncomfortable or unsupported. We’re here to do great work, but we’re also here to look out for each other.”

Brad’s approach is a reminder that leadership in the trades isn’t just about delivering quality results—it’s about caring for the people who make those results possible. Under his guidance, The Kitchen Business continues to honour its heritage while inspiring the next generation of workers.
