Forging Leaders
5 minute readThe 2026 Apprentice Leaders cohort recently spent four days at Outward Bound in Anakiwa, returning with more confidence, better self-awareness, and a shared commitment to lead with influence.

What they focused on:
Building cohesion
The group set expectations for how they wanted to work together, choosing positivity, adaptability and accountability. Early activities helped them communicate clearly and step confidently into leadership roles.
2. Working as a team
Using the Team Management Profile (TMP), participants learned about their natural working styles and how these can affect team performance. Problem solving tasks like raft-building, strengthened trust and collaboration between team members.
3. Reflection, resilience and identity
High ropes, kayaking, a solo overnight expedition, and feedback sessions encouraged apprentices to stay calm under pressure, build resilience and think about the type of leader they want to become.
4. Participant feedback highlights
Apprentices valued the time to reflect, build confidence, and the chance to step outside their comfort zones. Many gained deeper self-understanding and feel more capable as team members and leaders.
5. What comes next?
Ongoing support will focus on peer-led leadership, applying feedback at work, and maintaining regular reflection. Additional initiatives will include workshops, involvement at National Advisory Group meetings, advocacy work, and contributing learner voice to programme development.
