Painting tutors Meeting 2023

On 1 February 2023, BCITO hosted a meeting with Painting and Decorating tutors from across NZ. In attendance were tutors from Unitec, Weltec, WITT, Ara, and Otago Polytechnic.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the tutors could not get together in 2022 so this was a great opportunity for the tutors to review how block courses went in 2022 in their region, meet new providers, and share ideas.

The purpose of getting the painting tutors together is for BCITO to ensure all block courses delivered in New Zealand is consistent no matter what provider apprentices attend block course. It is also a great opportunity for us to listen to feedback from tutors and for the tutors to engage with each other. Often or not, tutors correspond via email and this is a chance for them to meet in person. It is also an opportunity for tutors to engage with BCITO staff that they have regular contact with.

Some of the main discussion points were:

  • Tutors all stressed the importance of attending block courses. They pointed out that while some trainees may have been working for a few years, they may lack theory knowledge. They tend to know the ‘what’ and ‘how’ but don’t know the ‘why’, which is crucial.
  • The tutors provided some feedback on some learning materials. They wanted to see the language used to be more suitable towards trades people rather than use academic terms.
  • The tutors received a virtual tour of how myBCITO works to better understand the tool that apprentices use
  • Tutors had a Q&A session with two members of the BCITO executive team. A great chance for tutors to talk about what’s going well and what needs to be improved etc.

On behalf of BCITO, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our Painting tutors across the country for their ongoing commitment and dedication to delivering off job training to our apprentices. BCITO is very fortunate to have such passionate and dedicated tutors.

We look forward to hosting the tutors again in early 2024.
