Fees Free policy

From 1 January 2025, the Government’s Fees-Free initiative transitioned from covering the first year of study to supporting the final year of study.

BCITO learners may be eligible for free fees under the Government’s Final Year Fees Free scheme. You will need to check your eligibility using your National Student Number (NSN) at feesfree.govt.nz.

If you have any questions, please contact info@bcito.org.nz.

Apprenticeship Boost

The Apprenticeship Boost provides reassurance for employers to keep existing apprentices and take on new ones.

Apprenticeship Boost is a payment available through the Ministry of Social Development (MSD) to support employers of apprentices who are less than 12 months into their apprenticeship (this includes any time they've spent on a similar apprenticeship). This is available for employers with existing and new apprentices.

Who can pay my fees?

There are three different groups that can pay your fees.

  • Yourself
  • Your employer
  • Third party e.g. a family member or friend

If your employer has agreed to pay your fees but this has not been stated on your Training Agreement, we will need you to complete a Change of Payer form, or we will need to receive an email from a verified company contact confirming they will pay your fees. They will need to specify in that email, if they are only paying the current year’s invoice or ALL fees.

Why is a ‘change of payer’ required?

It’s very important to make sure the correct payer is named on the invoice. Employers should not pay invoices if they are addressed to the Apprentice directly. This is because any credits that are applied to the invoice will go back on the same account as the original invoice. If an employer pays the apprentices’ invoices, they will miss out on the credit note being issued back to them.

How does BCITO invoicing work?

Our invoicing happens over a 12-month period from your start date. This is called your Anniversary date.

  • Your first-year fees are the full cost of the course you have chosen. This will be on the price list given to you upon sign up.
  • Your second-years fees and fees every year going forward are referred to as ‘Annual Industry Contribution’. It may be a full 12 months or partial.

If you have any questions about your invoices, contact CreditControl@bcito.org.nz

Can I set up an Automatic payment?

Unfortunately, our system does not recognise this payment method. It is recommended you sign up with our Direct Debit option to pay your qualification fees in manageable installments over the year.

What happens if I miss a payment?

If you miss a payment, you will receive an email and text message from us. Each time you miss an instalment, we will increase your next instalment amount to cover the missed payment.

If you have any questions, please contact the Credit Control team CreditControl@bcito.org.nz

Who should I contact to receive a refund?

If you think you are eligible for a refund, please phone our Business Support team (0800 422 486) or email Business.Support@bcito.org.nz to have it processed.

Why haven’t I received my BCITO certificate yet?

Your certificate will only be issued once all payments have been made. If you need help with paying your invoices, please contact the Credit Control team CreditControl@bcito.org.nz
