BCITO is committed to making the trades more attractive for women and ensuring they have the right tools, networks, and confidence to stay and grow.

In 2024, BCITO designed and launched the Women in Trade Workshops, a series of free sessions designed specifically for women apprentices. These workshops aim to help women build confidence, develop practical skills, and connect with other women in the trades.

Connie’s experience

For women in the trades, having support can make all the difference. Connie Johnson, a BCITO apprentice who works at Upper Hutt Robertsons Engineering Ltd says the Building Women Workshops offered valuable opportunities to learn and connect with other women in the trades.

“I found the workshops really inspiring. The conversations were intriguing, informative, exciting, funny, and everyone was welcoming and friendly. The variety of subjects were amazing too. These workshops are designed to meet everyone's needs, helping you build confidence in the workplace and in your personal life. They’re especially helpful when you’re facing tough conversations. The sessions cover important topics, and you also end up meeting lifelong friends,” said Connie.

Led by experts who understand the industry, each session focuses on real issues that women in the trades face - from menopause and pregnancy, to work–life balance, and mental health.

“For me, I took away that no matter what I am a part of the BCITO family, and there will always be someone there if I ever need help or someone to talk to. It was also reassuring to know that even the best of workers experience highs and lows,” said Connie.

Workshop success

The Women in Trade Workshops have been highly successful and have made a remarkable impact on those who have attended.

“Since its launch in 2024, more than 300 apprentices have been supported through this initiative. Our goal has always been to inspire and empower women in the trades. The workshops have created an inclusive and supportive environment where wāhine across Aotearoa can learn, connect, and share their experiences confidently,” said Amanda Williams, Principal Advisor for Women.

These workshops are a part of a range of initiatives and support that BCITO has available for women apprentices.

“Our recent Actions Speak Louder initiative, offers practical solutions for women apprentices by providing free period products and women-designed workwear. Our Women in Trades Toolbox offers a suite of resources that aim to educate, raise awareness, and promote inclusion across trade worksites. In addition, we also have two dedicated hubs on our website - one for apprentices and one for employers. Both are designed to provide practical support and useful information for women in trades across Aotearoa,” said Amanda.

As the workshops continue to evolve, BCITO’s focus remains on listening to women apprentices’ experiences and building communities where everyone in the trades can thrive.
