Glen Yang of D L Tiling Ltd joins the 2024/2025 BCITO Apprentice Leadership Group. Glen’s partnership with BCITO is part of the next intake of apprentice leaders in the Tiling sector, highlighting BCITO’s commitment to empowering and involving apprentices in shaping their learning experiences. The group, initiated in 2023, is a progressive approach to fostering collaboration and communication at the grassroots level within the construction trades.
His path into the trades and New Zealand underwent several trials before finding his sweet spot. After graduating with a Business Management degree from the University of Canterbury in 2020, he returned to China. He immersed himself in community operations at a Hong Kong-based cryptocurrency exchange. Despite the excitement surrounding his work, NZ was calling. When the borders reopened, he purchased a one-way ticket returning to the country that held a special place in his heart.
Not one to do anything by half; his quinella includes tiling, cooking, coffee, and crypto trading. The classic Kiwi meat pie is a favourite. He puts his own spin on it every Sunday by experimenting with new ingredients. Committed to getting the best coffee brew, he worked part-time as a barista during his student years. Today, eight months into his formal training, he is laying tiles in a country he calls home, following market financial trends and sharing trading experiences. His cup is full.
Glen advocates for sharing knowledge and skills to improve industry consistency so all can thrive and excel in their respective trades. As a leader, he prioritizes networking and forming strategic industry partners.
Glen joins Jan Pilapil of JCB Tiling Christchurch, the first Tiling apprentice leader, as the second voice for apprentices in the Tiling sector. They’re part of a dynamic cohort of 30 apprentice leaders, which includes 15 new additions, featuring two representatives from each BCITO-mandated trade.
The structure of the program, with a term of 24 months and a new cohort recruited every 12 months, ensures a continuous influx of fresh perspectives and ideas.
The emphasis on forming authentic partnerships between leaders, employers, industry, and BCITO is crucial for creating a supportive and effective learning environment.
We’re excited to team up with Glen! Ready to make some awesome changes to support all Tiling apprentices.
