Entering the world of exterior plastering – Kurt’s story

Our goal at BCITO is to help and support each of our apprentices to be as successful as possible in their development. To help achieve this goal we’ve formed a group of 15 apprentices to work with us and all our apprentices across all of our industry sectors. These apprentices are called Apprentice Leaders, and together they form the Apprentice Leadership Group.

We recently caught up with our Apprentice Leaders to learn more about how they got into their industries, what they love about the work they’re doing and what their vision is for the future.

Kurt, our Exterior Plastering Leader, had just finished school and was looking for a job when he was approached by a family friend about getting into exterior plastering.

“I had no idea about the industry and what the job involved, but I was keen for the work so gave it a go. I worked as a labourer for a year and really enjoyed the work so went for my apprenticeship in 2020 and have one more year to go.

It’s great being able to work outside, except when it’s raining, and there’s a lot of pride and satisfaction that goes into the work. I love the detailing and that I can take the job from start to finish. You can see the progress you make and can be proud of the finished product.

When I finish my apprenticeship, I want to learn as much as I can about the industry and then one day start my own business or go contracting.
